Choose your domain name
Head over to the Bluehost home page to choose and register your domain name. Be imaginative, but take the time to choose a name that reflects who you are and what you do.
Your name should be able to grow with your business. It should be short, easy to remember, and easy to tell people about so they can go and check it out for themselves. If your own name is available as a domain (.com is best) – this can be a good option to choose.
Choose your Bluehost pricing plan
Click the “Get started” button on the Bluehost site.
You’ll be taken to the pricing page. There are four hosting plans that you can choose, but the Basic plan is all you need to get started with. You can always change plans later if your business suddenly takes off and you need more space or extra features.
This plan only costs $2.95 per month. You’ll get 50GB of storage and a free SSL security certificate with this plan.
If you choose a 12-month payment option, it works out cheaper than paying per month. The 12-month plan also gives you a FREE domain name, which saves you some extra money.
The 36-month plan is overall the most cost effective choice of plan, as it works out much cheaper per month.
Register your domain name
When you select the plan you’re going with, you’ll be asked to enter the domain name you chose.
Remember you can always change your domain name in the future, but it can be a bit of a pain in the butt for multiple reasons, so it’s best to start with something you’ve put thought into.
If you’re on the 12-month Bluehost plan, you’ll get the domain free for the first year, and then start paying for your domain after that (usually around $15 a year).
Once you’ve set up your domain name, you’ll need to fill out your registration details.
Protect your privacy
Make sure you select the Domain Privacy Protection option during sign-up. This is ABSOLUTELY worth $0.99c a month so your email doesn’t get slammed with a ton of spam every day.
Trust me – I’ve been there, and it was not pretty.
You don’t need any of the other options that are displayed here, so make sure they’re unchecked and you’re not paying for extras.
Enter your personal and payment information.
Choose a secure password that nobody else can guess.
Click to install WordPress on your Bluehost account.
Congratulations – you’re all set up! Bluehost will guide you through the next steps to start your awesome new website.
Pick a WordPress theme you like from the Appearance > Themes menu in your WordPress dashboard. There are plenty of free themes to get you started. You can always change to a different theme, or try a paid theme later on.
You’re all done! Time to start adding your content and selling your services.
The most important pages on your website
The first three pages you create on your new freelance writer website should be your:
- Home page
- About page
- Contact page
Your home page needs to grab people’s attention within a few seconds, and tell them who you are, what you do, and the problems you solve. So it’s important to get this page right! It’s where most people will land when they search for writers and copywriters online.
Your About page should have a bio that’s easy to read, not too long (a common problem for a lot of writers!), and encourages clients to get in touch with you to find out more about your services.
This is fairly obvious 🙂 Make sure clients can easily find your email address, phone number, and social handles. A form field is great for ease of use for new clients, and you can also add questions about their project and budget into the form to make it easier for you to decide if they’re a good fit for you.
