My very first freelance writing website was built with WordPress and hosted with Bluehost. This initial website took me from an idea and zero dollars – to earning over $100,000 a year as a freelance copywriter.
Having my own website allowed me to get good clients early on in my business. This meant I could work, travel, and consciously build the life I wanted – all with enough money to live comfortably. It’s been amazing!
When I started my WordPress blog, it gave me another income stream to supplement my freelance writing work with content, ads, and affiliate marketing.
If you’re planning to grow a blog and monetize it, you might be looking at free options like Blogger and Wix to start your website, but there’s a ton of reasons why you should NOT do that.
Firstly, you won’t have your own personalized domain name, which makes you look unprofessional to advertisers or other people who can help you make money from your blog.
And secondly, you won’t be able to monetize it well with ads or affiliate links. This means you’ll need to go about the painful process of shifting your entire blog to another hosting provider, which can be time-consuming and expensive. So it’s best to start out with your own self-hosted WordPress blog using a company like Bluehost.

How To Start A WordPress Blog On BlueHost – Step By Step Guide
Click here to start a blog on WordPress – then follow the tutorial below for step by step directions.
Step 1 – Choose your domain name (it’s free!)
You can get a free domain name for 12 months if you register directly through Bluehost when you sign up for your Bluehost account. This makes things a lot cheaper and easier than buying a domain somewhere else and having to figure out how to point it at Bluehost to get your website working! So it’s definitely worth signing up for a 12 month plan. This will also save you the hassle of remembering to renew your plan every month!
Simply head over to the Bluehost home page to choose and register your perfect domain name. Be imaginative, but take the time to choose a name that reflects who you are and what you do.
Your name should be able to grow with your blog and business. It should be short, easy to remember, and easy to tell people about so they can go and check it out for themselves. If your own name is available as a domain (.com is best) – this can be a good option to choose.
Step 2 – Choose your Bluehost pricing plan
Click the “Get started” button on the Bluehost site.
You’ll be taken to the pricing page. There are four hosting plans that you can choose, but the Basic plan is all you need to get started with. You can always change plans later if your business suddenly takes off and you need more space or extra features.
This plan only costs $2.95 per month. You’ll get 50GB of storage and a free SSL security certificate with this plan.
If you choose a 12-month payment option, it works out cheaper than paying per month. The 12-month plan also gives you a FREE domain name, which saves you some extra money.
The 36-month plan is overall the most cost effective choice of plan, as it works out much cheaper per month.
Step 3 – Register your domain name
When you select the plan you’re going with, you’ll be asked to enter the domain name you’ve picked out for your blog.
Remember you can always change your domain name in the future, but it can be a bit of a pain in the butt for multiple reasons, so it’s best to start with something you’ve put thought into first!
If you’re on the 12-month Bluehost plan, you’ll get the domain free for the first year, and then start paying for your domain after that (usually around $15 a year).
Once you’ve set up your domain name, you’ll need to fill out your registration details.
Step 4 – Protect your privacy!
Make sure you select the Domain Privacy Protection option during sign-up. This is ABSOLUTELY worth $0.99c a month so your email doesn’t get slammed with a ton of spam every day.
Trust me – I’ve been there, and it was not pretty.
You don’t need any of the other options that are displayed here, so make sure they’re unchecked and you’re not paying for extras.
Step 5 – Enter your details
Enter your personal and payment information.
Choose a secure password that nobody else can guess!
Step 6 – Click to install WordPress on Bluehost
Click the link on the page that says “Create a WordPress site”, and you’re done.
Congratulations – you’re all set up! Bluehost will guide you through the next steps to start your awesome new website.
Pick a WordPress theme you like from the Appearance > Themes menu in your WordPress dashboard. There are plenty of free themes to get you started. You can always change to a different theme, or try a paid theme later on.
You’re all done! Time to start adding your content and selling your services.
